Birth Pools
Quality service with sturdy pools
Since 1992, Blue Lagoon Birth Pools has successfully supported women and Midwives, facilitating choice in childbirth. Thousands of Midwives, mothers and their partners have benefited from hands-on birth workshops and/or using one of our beautiful pools for labour and/or birth.
We are proud to have been involved in the shift away, where appropriate, from the medicalised model of birth. Over these past 31+ years many great changes have occurred. Now women going into a maternity unit who are considered ‘low-risk’ are routinely offered the use of a birth pool.
For home birth, Blue Lagoon continues to offer support for women with our straightforward birth pool hire service offering our aesthetically pleasing hexagonal pools. Having a reliable birth pool for a home birth really adds to the relaxed atmosphere and provides the comfort that women seek when choosing this birth option for labour and/or birth.
Blue Lagoon Birth Pools is run by Annie Renwick: “ I am a waterbirth mother myself, of course - and I remember the contrast between a hospital and home birth very clearly. For me, it was so satisfying to give birth in the pool in my own living room supported by my wonderful Midwife and surrounded by those I loved - and then be able to go back to sleep in my own bedroom - bliss! It all felt so comforting and ‘right’. After that I knew that this was something I wanted to help offer to other women so they would have more choice in childbirth.
When we started Blue Lagoon, virtually no maternity units had birth pools and we campaigned for many years through our hands-on education programme and birth workshops for Midwives and mums & their partners (mainly in the northwest), which helped shift attitudes. Now, most maternity units are able to offer the use of a birth pool to those deemed ‘low risk’(usually on a first come basis), which offers more choice for women. These days we focus on providing pools for home birth for women who have satisfactorily discussed their options with their Midwives.”
